The house of Praia das Mas

The architecture firm Frederico Valsassina Arquitectos has designed a building with two distinct faces: the first one more closed and the other more open and exposed. One of the main features of the house is to play with the external/internal binomial. In fact, all the spaces in the house have independent access to the outside. In this way all the environments establish a strong relationship with the pine forest, which distinguishes the exterior of the house.

The external portico due to its elevation with respect to the ground appears as a portico above the pine forest. If the house on one side comes from the earth, on the other due to the natural delicacy levitated gently on it. This solution appears as a strategy of environmental comfort, in fact the mountain range of Sintra has a very high humidity level and thanks to this solution the transfer of moisture from the ground to the house decreases. The large windows allow natural light to enter most of the day and therefore space heating.

By minimizing the effects on the natural landscape of the place, the pine forest was left as it was before construction. The house thus seems to float on the sandy ground respecting the ecosystem.
