The house above the pond.

The American studio Cutler Anderson Architects designed this house in Connecticut around a large pond, so that its inhabitants can observe birds, fish and insects in their natural environment.

In order to realize the house with minimal environmental impact the studio decided to separate the house into three volumes, which are arranged around the pond. The horizontal cypress panels cover the outside, left unfinished to last over time and blend in with the natural environment. Large quantities of glass were placed along the interior walls facing the water to give a wonderful view of nature.

Parts of the three volumes are lifted from the ground to keep all the lodgings on one level. Mobility is guaranteed by elevated walkways. The longest walkway connecting the pond has three sets of glass doors that open onto the surface of the water.

Entrance to the residence leads into the common areas of the house. Here, the kitchen separates the family room from the living room and the open-plan dining room facing south, an area that receives plenty of natural light. On the east side of the property, the second volume contains three bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls enclose the bedrooms, offering sweeping views of the forest.

Accessible from the long walkway, the third volume on the north side of the pond contains two additional bedrooms, as well as the garage of the house, which is accessed by a side road.
