Kimmel Quarter renovation by Schmidt Hammer Lassen

The Danish studio Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects won an international competition for the redevelopment of the Kimmel district, a historic district in the heart of the Latvian capital of Riga. The nineteenth-century complex of Kimmel Brewery, now largely abandoned, will be transformed into a mixed-use with a new office building, a hotel and a range of public facilities.

The winning proposal for the 11,500-square-meter district manifests itself as a lively, public-oriented program, including a gym, childcare center, cafeteria, food court and spa. A series of courtyards and squares are interwoven throughout the scheme, linking the old and the new in a "classic and timeless appearance that is also uniquely contemporary".

During the development of the project, the design team sought to modernize the brewery site without losing its unique historical roots. Where possible, the existing buildings at Kimmel Quarter will remain unaltered, retaining the authentic charm of the historic fabric of Riga. The new central office building will be constructed partly from recycled bricks taken from the site, with a shape inspired by the arches of the historic brewery. The recycled bricks will also be used for the rebirth of the former industrial factory of the brewery in a lively square, with brick and wood benches, lush landscapes and water elements fed with rainwater runoff.

The scheme responds to Riga’s ambition to achieve the 2020 EU climate targets. The rectangular grid facades of the office building are designed to allow maximum natural light inside, while the slats are attenuated by overheating due to direct sunlight.

Thanks to this combination of modernization, conservation and sustainability, the architects believe that the Kimmel district "has the potential to become an example for the future development of the city of Riga".
