Yin & Yang Project

The architectural firm Penda is working on a project that involves a small plot of land near the German city of Kassel. The house should be able to grow totally natural food on both sides of its terraced roof.

The project stems from the need of customers to have a largely self-sufficient house. Of course, in a house the most exposed space is the roof, so the architects of Penda designed it as a series of terraces that incorporate planters that will create a usable garden, which occupies most of the building’s footprint.

The shape of the dwelling includes two interlocking sections that define the living areas and a workspace. The form is based on the symbol of Yin Yang, a Chinese philosophy that describes how seemingly opposing forces can combine to create a balanced and stronger whole.

The unusual shape of the roof has stepped levels rising from the center of the house, evoking the way the mountains rise on either side of a valley. Rectilinear walls enclose the hanging garden on two sides, while the curved surfaces descend from opposite corners towards the center of the building. The property will include a carport from which an entrance to the center of the building leads to an area of circulation that provides access to various living and workspaces. A double-height office located at the front of the house has a staircase that climbs onto a mezzanine that can be used as a second workspace or a small workshop. The open kitchen and the dining area are located in the opposite corner of the office, next to the master bedroom. This double height space will be clad with large windows that overlook the surrounding nature.
