Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension Project

The British architect Will Alsop has renewed the subway stations in the neighborhoods of Pioneer Village and Finch West in Toronto, Canada, due of a project to modernize the city’s public transport.

The two stations are part of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension Project, which extends the metropolitan system of Toronto to York, a suburb of the city. The facilities were designed by Alsop and its All Design company.

Both stations are characterized by a cantilevered roof, internal walls in polished concrete and naturally bright colors. Black and white stripes cover the exterior of Finch West, characterized by intense colors and a large red window that overlooks the second floor of the façade. Pioneer Village instead is characterized by its color that has a strong rust, its worn steel coating and the impressive and magnificent canopy roof.

"The subway station entrances have been designed as a pair of sculptural structures, whose height exceeds that necessary, to increase their visibility," said in an Alsop statement.
