The house that looks at the Himalayas By Matra Architects

This private holiday house is located in the village of Satkhol, in the Indian district of Nainital, a popular site for tourists wishing to explore the landscape around the highest mountain range in the world. The building was designed by the Matra Architects studio in New Delhi and is located at 2,000 meters above sea level on a terraced plot that offers a panoramic view to the Himalayas.

Its forms take up the shape of the mountains that stand behind it, interpreting the ancient dwellings of the farmers present in the region. The building is positioned on the lower terrace of the site to minimize the visual impact on the surrounding nature and to provide a more intimate sense of connection with the adjacent forest.

The structure consists of four main wooden frames made of boards glued with steel tie rods. These support the entire wooden roof, a wooden mezzanine and the double-glazed skylight. The wooden walls are perforated by square windows that frame the views of the mountains, the forest and the sky. The kitchen overlooks the living room and the dining area which is flanked by a wall that separates this space from a couple of bedrooms. The large skylight allows natural light to filter into two further bedrooms located on the mezzanine floor.
