The Retro Capsule Hotel in Tokyo

Schemata Architects changed everything within the eight-story Shibuya hotel, with the exception of the capsules themselves. The result is an interior that combines contemporary and sober finishes with retro details.

The challenge for the Schemata team was to create an interior that fit the structure and idea of the old hotel. The solution was found by applying colors and materials that would have remembered as much as possible the old capsules, including a dark screed floor, plywood furniture, FRP plastic and simple furnishings. One of the most radical changes to the structure was the addition of saunas on the first and seventh floors.

"Our project aims to eradicate the image of the old capsule hotel by changing the interior and the environment by keeping the existing capsules as they are", explained the study guys.
