The Hedrick Study

The Hedrick Study, is the result of a complex project commissioned by Ucla, California University, Los Angeles, to the architecture company Johnson Favaro.

The idea of the project was to renovate an old campus area that was no longer attended by students. The reasons of this disinterest could be considered: the distance from the center of the campus and the poor supply of cafeteria products in the area. The Johnson Favaro company decided to change the whole area according to the students’ wishes and needs, enriching and amplifying them, giving life to the Hedrick Study. This consists of two main parts: the cafeteria and the various studio rooms. The first was modernized by implementing the offer to students. In fact, in addition to the cafe, there are two smaller areas. One dedicated to pizza and the other to the pastry shop.

The various common and study areas that were present in the campus wing were instead diversified and expanded. There are now reading rooms, a large study room, large common areas and even small living rooms with fireplace. Additionally, there are four small study rooms dedicated to students who need to work in groups and a larger one that instead offers more than sixty seats. Of course the environment is characterized by a modern and elegant design that is not heavy but light and familiar. The refined furnishings, besides being chosen to last for a long time, give a sense of exclusivity to the environments without making them less accessible. Furthermore, all rooms are equipped with a variety of power sockets and free Wi-Fi. Everything is designed and built to suit students.

Since it was opened in January 2017, the Hedrick Study hosts about three thousand students daily. Of course, the number grows significantly when approaching exam sessions. As Jim Favaro, one of its creators, says: "It’s like a big common living room." The goal achieved is precisely this: to transform a common university environment, making it comfortable and welcoming, just as if it were home.
