Paris courthouse

Designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, the building brings together the city’s various judicial services, formerly dispersed in the capital, to form the largest judicial complex in Europe.

Located within the urban development zone of clichy-batignolles, on the northern border of Paris, the 160-meter-high building is made up of volumes stacked, each lined with glass. Renzo Piano studio started working on the project seven years ago. The opening and official opening date is scheduled for early 2018. In building the structure, architects tried to reduce the size of the building, dividing it into four volumes of decreasing size.

The entrance is located at the base of the building, conceived as a "pedestal", reachable through a square of 6,000 square meters overlooking the porch-de-clichy. At least 50 workstations within the reception area minimize visitors’ waiting time, while three atriums ensure space is full of natural light. The top three blocks, which include a dozen floors each, have offices and meeting rooms. The second is the seat of most magistrates, the third of the public prosecutor’s offices, and the fourth and last block houses the presiding judges.

The block system translates into large terraces characterized by trees and other types of vegetation. From an environmental point of view, the project employs a series of strategies including the use of natural ventilation, the incorporation of photovoltaic panels on the facade and the collection of rainwater.
