Jazz club between modernity and antiquity

A brick staircase was found during the renovation of an old building from the late 18th century on the traditional Berggasse in Vienna. It had a depth of twelve meters, where an enormous cellar opened about 250 square meters.

Historical investigations have shown that this was a semi-legal institution born in the 1950s and 1960s in an era of the thriving jazz music scene in Vienna.

The cocktail bar, which was designed in the midst of this magnificent winery, is really breathtaking. It starts from an uncharted and very narrow entrance door leading to a first level containing the wardrobe. Going through a staircase you get to the main bar room with a counter of over seven meters.

The whole static structure as well as the ventilating pipes and further installations, were cladded in composition gold. The floor plate is covered with a layer of Italian nero marquina marble manually laid in a herringbone bond.
