FAED Kigali By Patrick Schweitzer

The architectural firm Patrick Schweitzer & Associés has conceived and developed the forms of the new Kigali Faculty of Architecture in Rwanda. This school covers an area of 5600 square meters and has the capacity to accommodate 600 students. More precisely, the complex is located on the campus of the University of Rwanda’s College of Science and Technology in the Nyarugenge district. Work began at the beginning of 2017 and was completed at the end of 2017.

The building is the result of a global analysis of the site. Its architecture is inspired by the territory, the colors and the forms of nature. The four natural elements are represented in the conception of the building: Fire: orange, Water: inner garden, Air: circulations and Earth: lava rock and rammed earth.

The study was determined to build a project that is itself a pedagogical tool. In effect, architecture shows the construction process to the students. It is also essential that aspiring young architects are encouraged to use local resources, also for this reason many iron and carpentry workshops have been installed on the site.

Simple technical solutions to build and maintain have been favored. There is no elevator but a wide and comfortable ramp to get to the second floor. There is no heating and air conditioning, but an efficient natural ventilation system. The architecture is used for the regulation of thermal atmospheres. Properly designed daylighting provides healthier and more pleasant conditions. It also reduces the demand for artificial lighting that can reduce running costs. The concrete walls are insulated, sealed and plastered from the outside in order to control the gain of solar heat. The building is also equipped with rainwater collection and storage units.
