Brandy distillery museum

The Moscow-based architectural and design studio, TOTEMENT / PAPER, has made a restyling of brandy distillery through the construction of two new buildings, which are clearly out of the ordinary.

The project is located in Chernyakhovsk, an ancient city in the Kaliningrad region of Russia, which was severely damaged during World War II. Built on an empty lot near a railroad, the complex includes a warehouse that, in addition to its primary function of storing brandy barrels, acts as a public space for welcoming customers.

The TOTEMENT / PAPER study devised the two buildings transfiguring the idea of male and female. "The low wooden storehouse embodies the symbolic image of mother earth," the architects explain.

Visitors entering the higher structure, representing male transfiguration, can look directly into the warehouse where the barrels are stored.
Both buildings were designed with the same geometric principles, they were linked to the main distillery building while remaining faithful to the design of the entire complex. According to the design team, the union of "male" and "female" buildings is intended to be a symbol of creation and rebirth and emphasizes the image of life.
