Bibo Ergo Sum

The American studio Home Studios has revised a bar in West Hollywood, using ribbed surfaces, soft colors and teardrop-shaped details to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a postmodern cafe.

Called Bibo Ergo Sum, which translates from Latin as "Bevo, so I am", the bar is the first to open in the newly renovated Robertson Plaza in West Hollywood. The area was in the past a lively place for shopping and dining, but it had been eclipsed by nearby Melrose. The entrepreneur Tait Forman decided to open a refreshment point where the locals could sip cocktails from a refined menu in a relaxed but quirky environment.

For the interiors, Home Studios have used a wide range of references. The architecture of the Vienna of 1900, the graphics of vintage French cinema posters, the work of the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto and the aesthetics of the film The Graduate of 1967 have all been cited by the company as influences.

The horseshoe-shaped bar is located in the center of the room, surrounded by tall stools. On the back, a shelving system for displaying liquor bottles has a curved shape reminiscent of the art deco motifs and its outline is illuminated. Dado railings are used to wrap the room at two heights and frame the arched door to the back baths. Vertical lines raised in the same shade the sand-colored walls above the cabins on the back. Other details include teardrop-shaped sconces with green fronts and translucent glass dividers held between striped marble cylinders on either side of the entrance.
