Art in the Open

The New York City Art Museum’s initiative corresponds to the fortieth anniversary of the advent of urban art, free from museum walls or showcases, which was born during the upgrading of many New York areas in the 1970s.

The exhibition will mainly concern how outdoor art, has influenced the city in recent decades. Following pioneering exhibitions such as outdoor sculpture in 1967 and thanks to the impressive growth in the number of public spaces available in the city: parks, squares and large streets. New York City joined the national trend of artists to revive urban centers and concentrate their art there.

"This idea has gained strength in an era of growing urban crisis, New York City was emerging from a period of extensive upgrading [...] which has transformed the very nature of street life. While the urban landscape seemed to lose its human dimension, at the same time it was creating new spaces for the artists to take over. "

The exhibition will be open to the public on November 10th. It will reflect the past, present and future of New York City’s urban art. There will be more than 125 images, models, objects, photos and videos of artists of the likes of Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Isamu Noguchi, Red Grooms and Kara Walker.
